Murray parts company with McLagan
Aug 18th

World no 4, Andy Murray and coach Miles Maclagan have ended their relationship after two and half years.
The split was confirmed by an announcement in Murray’s website, which is as follows:
Following a review of his coaching needs, Andy has parted company with Miles Maclagan. Andy is extremely thankful to Miles for his support and guidance over a long and successful period. Andy is completely focused on the US hardcourt season and he will review the situation after the US Open.
Andy said: “I’ve had a great relationship with Miles over the past two and a half years and I want to thank him for his positive contribution to my career. We have had a lot of success and fun working together.”
Miles added: “It’s been a privilege to work with Andy as his coach and I’m happy to have played my part in his career. I also want to thank the team for all their hard work over the years and I will miss working with them and Andy on a day to day basis. Andy is a great player and I know he will continue to have the success his talent and hard work deserves.”
However, Murray claimed that a difference of opinion was the reason he dropped the coach while Maclagan insists that their relationship has not become strained despite the conflict over how to approach Murray’s career.

The TenniscoachUK National Conference is a unique four day event that has traditionally featured many of the leading experts and coaches in the world. Over 190 coaches attended the 2009 event, which featured Jez Green, who has worked on the Tour for 15 years and presently is physical conditioner to Andy Murray and advisor to the MCTAGroup.
This year TenniscoachUK is providing a Coach Education conference experience aimed firmly in the direction of the vast majority of British Coaches. Most British Coaches earn the bulk of their income from servicing a broad range of clients in the club and development area rather than pure performance. This conference is designed to refresh our library of sound teaching drills, practices and activities that will reinvigorate the coaching that most of us routinely do in clubs.
- JOE DINOFFER (pictured) has had an extensive “world class” career in the tennis industry and has conducted clinics and exhibitions in over 50 countries, personally logging over 30,000 hours of instruction in English, Spanish and German. He is a Master Professional in both the PTR and USPTA, a distinction awarded to only a handful in the tennis industry. In 2006, he received the prestigious USPTA Tennis Industry Excellence Award. Joe is also the author and editor of 7 books and more than 20 DVDs. He writes regularly for Tennis, Smash, Tennis Life and Racquet Sports Industry magazines and also has numerous shows and tips airing on television in the United States on the Tennis Channel. In 1994 he started OncourtOffcourt, his own innovative tennis company, whose mission is to develop an extensive line of training aids and creative tennis products to help coaches help their student. Joe is a true innovator in coach education and support. We welcome him back.
- STEVEN MARTENS was the Belgium National Junior Tennis Champion in 1982, but decided his career path should focus on coaching. In 1987 he became a coach at the Belgium National Training Centre under the watchful eye and subsequently life-long mentorship of Ivo Van Aken. Steven became personal coach to many top players, including Sabine Appelmans and Xavier Malisse. In 1997 Steven was awarded the ITF Coach Fair Play Award and became Belgium Davis Cup Captain in 2001. He was made Technical Director at the Belgium Tennis Federation in 2005. Steven is currently Player Director at the Lawn Tennis Association based at the NTC Roehampton.
- MIKE BARRELL is a 20 year Tennis Teaching Professional. His goals are to see tennis grow and develop through the use of systems that more fit the developmental needs of young children and be recognised as a person who has contributed to this success and growth. Rapidly gaining a reputation as an informed speaker and presenter for a number of worldwide Tennis Associations and Federations, we are pleased that Mike has found time to appear and share his ideas.
- MARK BULLOCK is the former coach to the Great Britain Men’s Wheelchair team and the personal coach of Jayant Mistry, the former British No 1 for a number of years. He also worked with wheelchair athlete Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson at the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2001 Mark joined the International Tennis Federation as the Development Officer for wheelchair tennis before becoming the Manager of the department in 2008. With a solid background in tennis development before specialising down the wheelchair route, Mark has a breadth of knowledge and experience that can only serve to enhance our conference.
- Introducing comedian STEVE WOMACK. Steve is now firmly established as one of the country’s finest entertainers, the bulk of his work being in the corporate market. His initial forays into the world of entertainment took him into every kind of venue that would have him. He has sung and played guitar throughout Europe and Scandinavia; he played in pubs, bars, cafes and street corners. In 1988 he was voted winning comedian in Central TV’s New Faces Grand Final. More recently wowing the audiences of the cruise ships of the world and in corporate hospitality as an after dinner speaker and entertainer for a number of multi-national companies. Paul Anacone to work with Roger Federer
Jul 27th
Roger Federer is to work with coach Paul Annacone for a “test period” as the 16-time Grand Slam champion looks to get back to winning ways.
The Swiss will team up with Annacone as the American works out the remainder of his contract as men’s head coach at the Lawn Tennis Association until November.
Federer has slipped to third in the rankings after losing in the quarter-finals of the last two Grand Slams.
Annacone is a former coach to Pete Sampras and Tim Henman.
“I’ve been looking to add someone to my team and I’ve decided to spend some days with Paul Annacone,” Federer told his website.
“As Paul winds down his responsibilities working for the Lawn Tennis Association, we will explore our relationship through this test period.
“Paul will work alongside my existing team and I am excited to learn from his experiences.”
The LTA announced in May that the 47-year-old Annacone would leave his post in November after three years with the organisation.
Following Federer’s announcement on Monday, an LTA spokesperson said: “Any coach would relish the opportunity to work with one of the world’s best tennis players.
“As outlined in Roger Federer’s statement, Paul will do a number of days with Roger as he winds down his work with the LTA.”
Federer, 28, has won Wimbledon six times, the US Open five times, the French Open once, and sealed his fourth Australian title earlier this year.
But his quarter-final defeat by Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon followed an exit at the same stage of the French Open to Robin Soderling, and he has subsequently dropped to number three in the world – his lowest ranking for seven years.
Federer has had several temporary associations with coaches in recent years, including Darren Cahill, Jose Higueras and Tony Roche.
He is next due in competitive action at the Rogers Cup in Toronto from 9 August, before the US Open gets under way on 30 August.

TenniscoachUK National Conference 2010
Jul 27th
David Lloyd Racquet Centre, Bushey Nr Watford. WD23 2DL
Sunday 28th November – Wednesday 1st December
As attending delegates will know our first attempt at making our annual conference more accessible to members from the Midlands and North by moving our venue from Bisham Abbey to David Lloyd Bushey was a mixture of success and challenge.
Success in as much as many delegates found the all under one roof venue both convenient and accommodating and challenge in that the serving of the buffets and coffee breaks took much longer than anticipated and caused some delays.
It would be fair to say that the conference, whilst successful in the delivery of some excellent presentations that both informed and entertained also highlighted some areas that we know we have to improve on.
This year we have confirmed our main speaker in Joe Dinoffer from the USA; a speaker we thought excellent some years ago so we are asking him again. Joe’s credentials in US coach education and on the international coaches conference circuit is very high profile and amongst the best available. We are very pleased to welcome him back after a gap of a number of years. Check out Joe at; http://www.oncourtoffcourt.com.
Last year the accommodation we booked was very good though we were caught out by local traffic conditions that were unknown to us resulting in some delayed arrivals from these outlying hotels.
This year we have negotiated excellent rates with both the 4 Star Watford Hilton Hotel which is less than 500 yards away and also the 3 Star Ramada Jarvis Hotel which is less than 1 mile from our conference venue.
Both hotels feature full breakfast, premium level rooms along with pool, spa, sauna and gym facilities. For more information on your hotels go to the following websites;
http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/WATHNHN-Hilton-Watford-hotel/photoGallery.do
http://www.ramadajarvis.co.uk/hotels/watford/gallery.aspx
Both hotels are within walking distance of David Lloyd Bushey where dedicated conference parking will be available for coaches who are not resident delegates.
We have organized a swifter food service this year at David Lloyds who are working closely with us to make our annual conference better than ever.
This year we have gone for a longer format than last year. Many thought the two day conference of last year left no time for networking amongst our colleagues so this year the conference get together is planned to be on Sunday afternoon and the conference will end about 3.30 pm on Wednesday 1st December.
There will be three nights’ accommodation for residential delegates with lunches, coffee breaks and evening meals included in the package cost.
The full residential package will be £249 for twin room accommodation at the 3 star Ramada Jarvis and £269 at the closer 4 Star Hilton. Early bird bookers who confirm and pay prior to 1st October will get a 10% discount. Additionally we are keen to attract teams of coaches who may all come from the same club or locality so if you wish to enquire about a group booking this is the deal;-
If a group of 6 coaches makes a single group booking together then that group would only pay for 5 places at the package price. Effectively it’s a buy 5 get 1 free deal.
Top class live comedy entertainment will be provided by Steve Womack who many of you will have seen some years ago at our conference. See a clip of Steve on National TV here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uO9k0IcraQ&feature=related
This year we have reserved a time slot for TenniscoachUK members to give an on court presentation for 10 to 15 minutes on their top coaching tips and methodology. Whoever does the best session will be invited to present at next year’s conference and get paid expenses for doing so! Please email or call me if you are interested in giving the conference the benefit of your experience and opinions with your short on court presentation.
The popular Timed Tournament is also to make a return visit. First rounds to be played on Sunday afternoon. Get your name down early.
The full conference schedule will be available soon so keep checking the website. Early bird bookers can contact me or call the office now on 01902 758500
